History / Overview of Clarkstown Recreation & Parks Commission
In 1959, at the request of the New City Civic Association, a citizen's committee was formed to consider the recreational needs of the Town of Clarkstown. Its findings were presented to the Supervisor and Town , Board, and resulted in the formation of the Clarkstown Recreation Commission in 1960, with James Damiani as its first Chairperson.
From 1960 to the Spring of 1967, the Commission was run by part-time staff. In April of 1967, Edward J. Ghiazza was hired to be the first Superintendent of Recreation and Parks. A full-time Secretary was also hired. By the early 1970's, land was purchased for parks and pools and more full-time staff was added. In 1974, Charles F. Connington, was hired as Recreation Supervisor.
When Mr. Ghiazza retired in 1992, Mr. Connington became the second Superintendent of the Clarkstown Recreation and Parks Commission. In the fall of 2006, Mr. Connington retired after 32 years with the Town of Clarkstown. Jo Anne Pedersen was promoted to Superintendant of Recreation and Parks in April 2007. Today we now have 51 full time employees ranging from professional recreation personal, secretaries, custodians, and park maintenance staff.
From its inception, the Recreation and Parks Department has grown, providing comprehensive recreational programs and activities for everyone in our community. Our Park system incorporates about 700 acres of park land, four (4) Community Centers, three (3) outdoor pools, three (3) picnic areas, two (2) picnic shelters, twelve (12) ball fields, one (1) soccer field, two (2) bocci ball courts, two (2) tennis courts, one (1) wheel park, five (5) playgrounds, four (4) outdoor basketball courts, and a historic home and barn. We also partner with the various school districts in our Town for use of school facilities allowing the administration of many of our programs.
