SUPERVISOR ISSUES LOCAL EMERGENCY ORDER CALLING FOR MANDATORY
EVACUATION OF CERTAIN NEIGHBORHOODS SOUTH OF THE LAKE DEFOREST RESERVOIR
(New City, NY) - Supervisor Alexander Gromack,
the Chief Executive Officer of the Town of Clarkstown, declared a State of
Emergency effective at 12:00 noon on August 27, 2011, to remain in effect until
12:00 noon on September 1, 2011. New
York State Executive Law also provides that in the event of a Local State of
Emergency, the Supervisor may issue Local Emergency Orders relating to the
health safety and welfare of the public, including, but not limited to the
designation of specific zones within which the use and occupancy of buildings
is prohibited.
Based on reliable data from various sources Town Officials
have determined that certain neighborhoods south of the Lake DeForest Reservoir in the Town of Clarkstown may suffer
catastrophic flooding as a result of the predicted rainfall associated with
Hurricane Irene.
At approximately 8:00 p.m. on August 27th, the Supervisor
issued Local Emergency Order 1-2011, which calls for the mandatory evacuation
of the following areas:
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
All residents and businesses located within the area bounded to the
North by Old Mill Road, West Nyack; to the West by Strawtown
Road, West Nyack; to the South by Route 59 and to the East by the CSX Railway;
SPECIFIC STREETS AFFECTED:
Old Mill Road (from Strawtown Rd.
to Snake Hill Rd)
Jeffrey Court
Hunter Place
Louise Drive
Adele Road
Sable Court
West Street
Theresa Drive
Klein Avenue
Benson Avenue
Phillips Lane
Fulton Avenue
West Nyack Road (from Strawtown
Road to Western Highway)
Strawtown Road (East Side from Old
Mill Road to Route 59)
Residents are ordered to evacuate as soon as possible, but
no later than 11:59 p.m. Residents may
take shelter at Rockland Community College located at 145 College Road, Suffern
or Nyack High School located at 360 Christian Herald Road, Upper Nyack.
A copy of the Local Emergency Order and a map of the
affected area are attached. The Town
will be holding a press conference at 9:30pm at the Clarkstown Police
Department, 20 Maple Avenue, New City.
