City, NY) – Last month, Town of Clarkstown Supervisor Alex Gromack in
conjunction with the Town Board and the Clarkstown Police Department announced
the start of “Operation Slow Down,” a public awareness and enforcement
initiative against speeding and reckless drivers throughout the Town.
“Our
Traffic Officers identified specific streets in the Town of Clarkstown, based
on volume and speed, that require added attention to ensure our resident’s
safety,” said Supervisor Gromack. “The purpose
of Operation Slow Down is to educate our residents and raise awareness about
the dangers of speeding through our neighborhoods. This is just another way our
police department is keeping our Town safe.”
There
are about 25 roadways listed as the most notorious for speeders. The full list of roads is below.
Each month the Clarkstown Police Department will select another five of
the roads listed herein.
Last
month, traffic enforcement occurred on the following streets with the total
number of violations at 203.
Kings
Highway in Valley Cottage - 47
Townline Road in Nanuet - 30
Laurel
Road in New City - 28
North
Broadway in Upper Nyack - 9
New
Clarkstown Road in the Clarkstown portion of Spring Valley – 89
At
this time last year there were a total of 29 violations cited for the same five
streets.
“So
far Operation Slow Down is proving to be successful,” said Chief Michael
Sullivan. “The program focuses on public safety, education about speeding, and
enforcement. We hope residents and visitors
continue to become more aware of the dangers of speeding through our
neighborhoods.”
Clarkstown
Police will increase traffic enforcement on the following five roads throughout
the month of March: Bardonia Road in Bardonia, Prospect Street in Nanuet, Rose Road in Nanuet,
Old Haverstraw Road in Congers, and Old Route 304 in New City.
The
Clarkstown Police Department received a $15,000 Selective Traffic Enforcement
Program (STEP) grant from the Governor’s Traffic Safety Commission that will be
utilized to fund Operation Slow Down. While
traffic enforcement will be increased in these individual areas, routine
traffic enforcement will continue throughout the Town.
