Town Launches Operation Slow Down
(New City, NY)
- Town of Clarkstown Supervisor Alex Gromack in conjunction with the
Town Board and the Clarkstown Police Department is announcing the start of
“Operation Slow Down,” a new strict enforcement initiative against speeding and
reckless drivers throughout the Town.
“Our Traffic Officers have
identified specific streets in the Town of Clarkstown, based on volume and speed, that
require added attention to ensure our resident’s safety,” said Supervisor Gromack. “The
purpose of Operation Slow Down is to educate our residents and raise awareness
about the dangers of speeding through our neighborhoods. This is just another
way our police department is keeping our Town safe.”
There are about 25 roadways
listed as the most notorious for speeders, including Kings Highway in Valley Cottage, Townline Road
in Nanuet, Laurel Road
in New City, North Broadway in Central Nyack,
and New Clarkstown Road
in the Clarkstown portion of Spring Valley. The roads are slated first for increased
Traffic Enforcement. The full list of
roads is attached. Each month the
Clarkstown Police Department will select another five of the roads listed
herein.
“This initiative will help
residents and those who travel through Clarkstown become more aware of the
speed limits throughout our neighborhoods,” said Councilwoman Shirley Lasker. “Our goal is
to keep our seniors, families and children safe by encouraging safe and
cautious driving.”
The Clarkstown Police Department
received a $15,000 Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) grant from the
Governor’s Traffic Safety Commission that will be utilized to fund Operation Slow
Down. While traffic enforcement will be
increased in these individual areas, routine traffic enforcement will continue
throughout the Town.
“Operation Slow Down gives us the
opportunity to pay specific attention to the identified streets with speeding
problems in Clarkstown,” said Captain Michael Sullivan. “We hope residents and visitors will heed our
warning and slowdown.”
Both Gromack
and Sullivan are confident of the program’s success because it focuses on
public safety, education of residents about speeding, and enforcement.
