Clarkstown Opens Congers Synthetic Ice Rink

(New City, NY) - Supervisor Alexander J. Gromack, the Town Board and the Parks Board and Recreation Commission announce that the Town of Clarkstown is holding a ribbon cutting ceremony and grand opening of the new Congers Synthetic Ice Rink.

Location:         Congers Synthetic Ice Rink

Congers Lake Memorial Park

6 Gilchrest Road, Congers

 Date:              Saturday, January 29, 2011

(Snow date: Sunday, January 30th)

Time:               1:00 PM

Supervisor Gromack and the Town Board will kick off the event with a ribbon cutting ceremony.  The event will also feature skating and hockey demonstrations. After the ceremony, residents are invited to free open skating.  Free rental skates will be available to use or residents can bring their own.

Synthetic Ice is made of a plastic compound. However, it not only has the look of real ice but you can skate on it with regular ice skates.  In fact, it is easier to skate on for beginners than real ice.  Audiences, who attend Disney on Ice and other star studded ice spectaculars at Radio City, Madison Square Garden, and Convention Centers across the country, are actually watching world class skaters perform on synthetic ice. Many traveling ice shows use it.  It is also a teaching aide in skating schools for figure skaters, speed skaters and hockey players around the world.

“The Town offers a wide range of recreational programs to our residents and we are proud to now offer ice skating on the Congers Synthetic Ice Rink,” said Supervisor Gromack.  "We encourage Clarkstown families to come to our beautiful park and utilize this new facility."

The Town of Clarkstown secured a grant to resurface the hockey rink in Congers Lake Memorial Park last year from New York State Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski.

“I'm happy the Congers Ice Rink will be opening this winter season with a new synthetic ice surface that can be used all year round,” said Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski.  “I am pleased that I was able to secure a grant that assisted in making this project a reality.  This new addition to Clarkstown's recreational facilities will be a great asset for the community to enjoy.”

Councilwoman Shirley Lasker, liaison to Parks and Recreation, who was instrumental in securing this unique ice sports center said, “This is the best beginners training and instructional ice skating surface ever made.  The ice will be used by families, hockey players, teams, figure skating clubs, and for after school programs.  It is devoted to the families of Clarkstown and healthy family centered athletic activity.”

All residents are invited to attend.
