Clarkstown Town Clerk Justin Sweet Sponsors Dog Bite Prevention Seminar

Clarkstown Town Clerk Justin Sweet will be sponsoring a seminar on dog bite prevention, in honor of National Dog Bite Prevention Week, at Clarkstown Town Hall, 10 Maple Avenue, New City, NY, on Thursday May 19, 2011, at 7 P.M. in the auditorium. National Dog Bite Prevention Week is May 15th through May 21st.

Dog bites are one of the nation’s most commonly reported public health problems, despite being largely preventable. Alarmingly, 4.7 million Americans are bitten by dogs each year, according to the Center for Disease Control. Therefore, as the licensing authority for issuing dog licenses, Mr. Sweet has taken the initiative to help educate residents on this important safety issue.

In order to raise awareness about dog safety in our community, Clarkstown Town Clerk Justin Sweet along with Clarkstown’s Animal Control Officer Patricia Coleman have invited Dottie Zaris, dog trainer for Canine Coaching and Kerry Potter-Kotecki of Doggone Safe, a not for profit organization, to provide an informative seminar for residents. The seminar will provide empowering information to promote healthy, safe, dog friendly communities.  This program is an excellent opportunity for parents, dog owners, or anyone who is around dogs to learn basic dog body language.

Mr. Sweet stated “Unfortunately, many children develop a lifelong fear of dogs from one negative interaction with a dog.  If children are taught basic rules to follow when encountering a dog, this can easily be avoided.  I hope that residents take advantage of this free event to educate themselves and their children about the do’s and don’ts of dog interaction.” Clarkstown’s Animal Control Officer Patricia Coleman added “It’s that time of the year when children and dogs will be outside.  It’s a great time for people to get educated about keeping children, their pets and themselves safe from mishaps.”

With almost 5 million victims of dog bites annually in America, Town Clerk Justin Sweet urges residents to educate themselves at this important seminar.  Please call Clarkstown Town Clerk Justin Sweet at 845-639-2010 for more information.
